Are your puppies AKC registered and microchipped?

Accepted Answer

Yes! All our puppies are registered with the American Kennel Club. Are they microchipped? Yes! Registration and permanent identification via microchip is included at no cost to you.

What health testing do you perform on your breeding dogs?

Accepted Answer

All of our breeding stock undergoes comprehensive health testing including BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) hearing tests, OFA hip and elbow evaluations, Thyroid and/or CAER eye exams as required to receive OFA's CHIC certification. We only breed dogs that pass all required health screenings.

At what age do puppies go to their new homes?

Our puppies go home at 8 weeks of age. This allows them to complete critical socialization with their littermates and mother while still being young enough to bond deeply with their new families.

Are the puppies socialized?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Our puppies are whelped and raised in our home — not in a kennel. From birth they are handled daily, exposed to household sounds, different surfaces, and a variety of people. We also use Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) protocols during the first two weeks of life.

Do you screen for deafness?

Yes — BAER hearing testing is one of our most important health protocols. Deafness is a known concern in the Dalmatian breed. Every puppy is BAER tested before going home.

How do I get on the waitlist?

Do you require a deposit?

Yes, a deposit is required to hold your place on the waitlist and to reserve a specific puppy from a litter. Deposit details are discussed during the application process.

Do you ship puppies?

Accepted Answer

We strongly prefer in-person pickup so families can meet us and see where their puppy was raised. In select circumstances we may consider ground transport for approved families. We do not ship puppies via cargo.

Can I visit before committing?

We welcome visits from approved applicants. We ask that you complete our inquiry process first so we can schedule a time that works for both families. Visits are by appointment only.

Do you offer a health guarantee?

Yes. Our puppies come with a written health guarantee covering genetic and hereditary conditions. Full details are included in our puppy contract, which we share with all approved families prior to placement.

Dalmatians are loyal, energetic, and affectionate dogs that thrive in active households. They do best with families who can provide daily exercise, mental stimulation, and consistent training. They are generally good with children and other pets when properly socialized from puppyhood.

How much exercise does a Dalmatian need?

Dalmatians are a high-energy breed originally bred to run alongside carriages for miles. They require at least 1–2 hours of vigorous exercise per day. They excel at running, hiking, agility, and other dog sports. A bored Dalmatian can become destructive.

A healthy, well-cared-for Dalmatian typically lives about 13 years — many of our dogs have lived past 15 years. What is OFA CHIC certification and why does it matter?

The OFA Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) is a centralized health database. A dog earns a CHIC number by completing all health tests recommended by its parent breed club — for Dalmatians that includes BAER hearing, OFA hips, OFA elbows, thyroid, and CAER eye exams. CHIC certification means the results are publicly searchable, giving buyers full transparency. All HatTrick breeding dogs hold OFA CHIC certification.

What is BAER testing and why is it important for Dalmatians?

BAER (Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response) testing is the gold-standard method for detecting deafness in dogs. Dalmatians have a higher rate of congenital deafness than most breeds due to the extreme piebald gene responsible for their white coat. A dog can be unilaterally deaf (one ear) or bilaterally deaf (both ears). BAER testing identifies both. Every HatTrick puppy is BAER tested before going home — we never place a bilaterally deaf puppy.

You can search any dog's OFA health results at ofa.org using the dog's registered name or AKC number. Results for hips, elbows, thyroid, CAER eyes, cardiac, and BAER hearing are all publicly listed. We encourage all buyers to look up our dogs' records before committing — transparency is a hallmark of ethical breeding.

What makes a Dalmatian "show quality"?

A show-quality Dalmatian closely conforms to the AKC breed standard in structure, movement, coat, and temperament. This includes correct size and proportion, well-defined round spots with no ticking or patches, proper angulation for effortless gait, and a confident, outgoing temperament. Show-quality does not mean "pet quality" dogs are inferior — it simply means they have a minor deviation from the standard that would not affect their health or suitability as a companion.

Yes — we are a lifelong resource for every family we place a puppy with. Whether you have questions about training, nutrition, health, or behavior, we are always available by phone or email. We genuinely care about every dog we breed for the entirety of their life.

What if I can no longer keep my dog?

We have a strict return policy: any HatTrick Dalmatian must be returned to us rather than rehomed independently. We will always take back a dog we bred, no questions asked. This is a lifelong commitment we make to every puppy. Ethical breeders always take back their own dogs — rescue is for puppies that did not come from ethical breeders.

What should I look for in a responsible Dalmatian breeder?

A responsible Dalmatian breeder health tests all breeding dogs (BAER, OFA hips, thyroid, CAER eyes), is transparent about results, breeds to the AKC standard, raises puppies in the home, screens buyers carefully, and takes back any dog they breed at any point in its life. They are members of the Dalmatian Club of America and ideally hold AKC Breeder of Merit status.

HatTrick Dalmatians breeds one or two carefully planned litters per year, health tests every breeding dog, raises puppies in our home with daily socialization, and maintains a lifelong relationship with every family. We have been doing this for over 35 years — this is our passion, not a business.

Why do well-bred Dalmatian puppies cost more than pet store or online puppies?

The price of a well-bred Dalmatian reflects the cost of health testing, quality nutrition, veterinary care, AKC registration, BAER testing, microchipping, and the time invested in raising a properly socialized litter. Cheap puppies often come with expensive health and behavioral problems. Investing in a responsibly bred puppy is investing in years of companionship and lower lifetime veterinary costs.
